Breastfeeding is an essential process that keeps both the mother and the baby healthy and happy. It provides life-long benefits to the baby and also reduces the mother’s risk of developing life-threatening diseases like breast cancer.
However, breastfeeding is not as easy as it sounds.
Almost one in every three mothers faces some or the other kind of problem when breastfeeding their baby. Some of these problems can easily be solved by mothers themselves, however, some problems might require medical attention as well.
Common Breastfeeding Problems (and, their solutions)
Here are some common breastfeeding problems and some easy, effective solutions to solve your problems as well –
1. Sore or cracked nipples
Sore or cracked nipples are one of the most common breastfeeding problems that almost every mother faces once. It usually happens because your baby is positioned the wrong way or is being latched in the wrong way.
Solution – There are some simple home remedies that you can try for immediate relief. You can apply a warm compress every now and then; and, also change nursing pads frequently.
2. Engorged breast
Breast engorgement is also very common and usually happens during the early days of breastfeeding or when your baby is older and doesn’t feed more often. It basically is a sign that your breast is full of milk. It can lead to pain and tightness in the breast as well.
Solution – The best solution is to simply wait because with due time your milk supply will match your baby’s needs. In the meantime, you can try massaging your breasts while feeding and can also use a warm compress twice or thrice a day.
3. Producing insufficient milk
During the early days of breastfeeding, often the milk supply is insufficient. However, with time it gets better naturally and you can also do a few things to stimulate milk supply.
Solution – Try to alternate between your breasts while feeding the baby to stimulate the milk supply. You can also consume herbs and other supplements that can aid your lactation efforts. However, it is best to consult your doctor before taking any supplements.
4. Blocked milk duct
A block milk duct is also a common problem and usually happens when your breasts are engorged for a long time. It can also make your breasts tender and painful. You can try some home remedies for instant relief, however, if it doesn’t work, you should consult a doctor.
Solution – Try to feed as much as possible from the affected breast as it will stimulate the milk supply. You can also try to position your baby with their chin pointing towards the lump in your breast so that milk supply can be stimulated from that particular area.
Talk to your doctor
It is common to face some or the other problem while breastfeeding. If it is your first baby, there are higher chances that you might face an unforeseen problem.
Most of these problems get resolved with time and practice, however, you must know when to talk to your doctor. For example, sore and cracked nipples can often lead to a thrush infection which can cause serious harm to you and your baby. Hence, if you are not able to experience any relief with time or over-the-counter medicines, do talk to your doctor.
